SpaceUp History

Since its inception in 2010 the world has seen many dozens of SpaceUp Unconferences, bringing together thousands of people to talk about the past, present and future of space exploration, astronomy and everything related to that. 2018

SpaceUp Federation (Toulouse, 23 June 2018)

Another event idea from the tireless SpaceUp France team focused on the Federation initiative. This SpaceUp unonference was successfully held on 23 June in a beautiful city Toulouse.

The Federation initiative was officially launched by CNES in June 2017 during the International Paris Air Show. It aims at opening space infrastructure to citizens and developing a Space disruption ecosystem able to produce open knowledge and open source space hardware in a collaborative and responsible way.

SpaceUp Federation unconference contributed to the Toulouse Space Show Off events with the purpose to celebrate the first year of the Federation initiative.For more details about this event check out SpaceUp France site.

mini-SpaceUp France (Paris/Toulouse, 10 June 2018)

mini-SpaceUp event is a SpaceUp unconference lasting one evening to bring the local community together. This year SpaceUp France team brings it to a whole new level by making events simultaneously all over France! Main language of the event was French. SpaceUp London (London, United Kingdom, 9-10 June 2018)

Join us for another SpaceUp London in 2018! A SpaceUp is an event where attendees drive the topics discussed and are encouraged to present to each other their interests  in astronomy, science and space exploration. SpaceUp Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain, 12-13 May 2018)

A new edition of  SpaceUp Barcelona was announced in the beginning of February. The SpaceUp Barcelona is a two-days space unconference, where participants decide the topics, schedule, and structure of the event. Everyone who attends SpaceUp is encouraged to give a talk, moderate a panel, or start a discussion. For more info check out the official SpaceUp Barcelona site!

SpaceUp Pisa (Pisa, Italy, 5-6 May 2018)

After the success of the two SpaceUp unconferences — in Rome in 2015 and in Milan in 2016 — the event is coming to Italy again. The third Italian SpaceUp will take place this year in Pisa on May 5th and 6th. For more info about the event check out the official SpaceUp Pisa site!

SpaceUp Nigeria (Lagos, Nigeria 28 April 2018)

The first SpaceUp event in Africa took place in Nigeria on 28th of April. Idea of SpaceUp Nigeria was birthed in International Space University ISU SSP during Summer of Space in 2017. This year the dream of the team came true! The program of event provided opportunity for everyone who attended to give a talk. All participants took very active part in discussions.

SpaceUp Skoltech (Skolkovo, Moscow 21 April 2018)

After the success of the first SpaceUp event in Russia last year, Skoltech has geared up for the second edition. This year SpaceUp Skoltech was brought in a new dimension that echoes the Skoltech spirit. The main topic of the SpaceUp Skoltech was “Limitations of current Space Development”. SpaceUp Perú (Lima, 14 April 2018)

After the first event in South America in 2017, we are happy to see the unconference vibe spreading across the continent to the first SpaceUp in Perú!  The University of Engineering and Technology UTEC in Lima, Perú, had opened another great SpaceUp year! 2017

SpaceUp Mexico (Mexico DF, POSTPONED DUE TO EARTHQUAKES)

The honour of hosting the first SpaceUp in Central America goes to Mexico! Another World Space Week 2017 event, this two-day space weekend in Mexico City could be estupendo! Check out the spaceupmexico.org for more info.

SpaceUp Bulgaria (Sofia, Bulgaria, 9 November 2017)

Another first in the 2017 of firsts! This event was held at the Technical University of Sofia (Block 10, Hall 10103). Due to the expected amount of local students, this primal language of this event was Bulgarian!

SpaceUp BIT (Beijing, China, 3 November 2017)

The first independent SpaceUp in China was held in November of 2017! The prestigious Beijing Institute of Technology was host to this great university-led space unconference. Check out for more information about this event: spaceupbit.com!

SpaceUp Cote d’Azur (Nice, France, 21-22 October 2017)

The epic series of SpaceUp events in France continues with the third SpaceUp in France in 2017. This was the very first event on the beautiful, romantic and spacey Cote d’Azur! It took place in the Mediterranean on 21 and 22 October, with some late summer beach partying and talking space! See spaceup-cotedazur.com for more info.

SpaceUp Portugal (Lisbon, 7 October 2017)

The first SpaceUp Portugal was held in Lisbon on World Space Week! Check out www.spaceupportugal.com for more info!

SpaceUp Colombia (Bogota, 4 October 2017)

The first SpaceUp in South America took place in Bogota, Colombia, on 4 October 2017. Part of the annual World Space Week celebrations, the beautiful Fundación Unversitaria Los Libertadores hosted this unique opportunity for students and the general public in Bogota to talk ‘espacio’ in a new continent! mini-SpaceUp Paris (Paris, France, 17 September 2017)

A new concept by the awesome SpaceUp France team! On Sunday afternoon 17 September they hosted a mini-SpaceUp in the French capital. A ‘Science Cafe’ like event to talk space in unconference style from 17:00 onwards. See this webpage for all details (évènement en Français).

SpaceUp IAF GLEX (Beijing, China, 5 June 2017)

The third edition of the IAF SpaceUp unconference, organized as a pre-event for the Global Space Exploration conference in Beijing 6-8 June. Tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of 5 June, more details about event is on the IAF GLEX website.

SpaceUp Norway (Trondheim, 18-19 March 2017)

A full three degrees further North than the previous northernmost event, the first SpaceUp in Norway was really a special one! And there is a lot of space going on in Norway that we want to learn about. So join us in Trondheim for SpaceUp Norway!

SpaceUp ISU (Strasbourg, 11-12 March 2017)

SpaceUp Toulouse (4-5 February 2017)

2016

SpaceUp Barcelona (26-27 November 2016)

After a try-out in 2014, an extended team of space enthusiasts are organizing a full two-day SpaceUp in Barcelona, Spain this year! The unconference will take place on November 26-27th 2016, at the Castelldefels Campus of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (where the ESA BIC is located). More news will follow soon! SpaceUp Manchester, UK (25-26 November 2016)

SpaceUp Manchester is an event for space enthusiasts of every capacity, from young people to students, educators to scientists, creatives to citizens, technologists to entrepreneurs, and professionals within the space and research community. See the SpaceUp Manchester website for more info.

SpaceUp Sweden (19-20 November 2016)

After the success of SpaceUp Sweden 2014 we are happy to announce a second space unconference in Stockholm 19-20th November, 2016. This year we will have two days of talks, discussions and networking with space enthusiasts from all over the world. See the SpaceUp Sweden website for more info.

SpaceUp Milan (5-6 November 2016)

After the great success of SpaceUp Rome in 2015 we are very happy to announce the second Italian SpaceUp unconference to be hosted in Milan! SpaceUp Milan will be held at the Politecnico di Milano on 5 and 6 November 2016. SpaceUp Cork (8 October 2016)

Welcome to SpaceUp Ireland! Ireland’s very first space unconference taking place at the Cork Institute of Technology on Saturday 8th of October 2016. Check out the dedicated website on what to expect and how to register.

SpaceUp Haifa (22 July 2016)

The very first SpaceUp Unconference in the Middle East will take place on 22 July 2016, at the renowned Technion Israel Institute of Technology. After four Nobel Prizes at this institute it is time for the leading global space unconference to land in Haifa. This event coincides with the ISU Space Studies Program 2016 at Technion, ensuring a very international and very talkative crowd to be present. SpaceUp Stuttgart (17 July 2016)

SpaceUp Australia (3 July 2016)

SpaceUp IAF GLIS – Geneva (5 June 2016)

We are proud to announce the upcoming SpaceUP GLIS 2016 in Geneva! This space unconference is organised in conjunction with and as a pre-event to the Global Conference on Space and the Information Society ‪#‎GLIS2016‬, organised by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC). SpaceUp UK – London (3-4 June 2016)

After the great success of the first SpaceUp UK event in 2014, a new organizing team has taken it upon them to make the second edition even more successful. SpaceUp Finland – 6-7 February 2016

The SpaceUp team in Helsinki hosted a SpaceUp in their city at 60 degrees North and shared Finnish hospitality, lots of space talking with the ‘coolest’ space community on the planet and a good chance for the first Aurora Borealis sighting over a SpaceUp venue! 2015

SpaceUp X – Paris Polytechnique – 7-8 November 2015

Following the success of the first French SpaceUp, that was held in May 2013 at the Parisian headquarters of the European SpaceAgency (ESA), and the second unconference at Cité de l’Espace in Toulouse in September 2014, the SpaceUp France organizing team hosted SpaceUp X in Palaiseau (near Paris), France on 7 and 8 November 2015. SpaceUp Atlanta - 7 November 2015

SpaceUp Rome – 24-25 October 2015

One of the first cities in the world, but the eternal city Rome never hosted a SpaceUp. In fact, SpaceUp Rome was the first SpaceUp in Italy. Hosted at the famous La Sapienza University this was another great event. Good food was guaranteed too! Rome was the place to be in the weekend of October 24-25, where the Italian space crowd met! SpaceUp Netherlands - 3 October 2015

The next SpaceUp Netherlands was organised at ESA-ESTEC visitor centre SpaceExpo in Noordwijk 3 October, 2015. More details at website: http://www.spaceup.nl/.

SpaceUp Australia - 25 July 2015

SpaceUp Australia 2015 was hosted at the University of Sydney in Sydney, New South Wales. More information at our website (www.spaceupaustralia.org).

SpaceUp at IAF Global Space Innovation Conference in Munich – 23 June 2015

The International Astronautical Federation included a full SpaceUp day during the first day of the Global Space Innovation Conference (GLIC) in Munich on 23 June 2015, from 9:00 to 15:00. More information on the GLIC SpaceUp program website.

SpaceUp ISU

The International Space University Central Campus in Strasbourg, France hosted its first space unconference on 11-12 April 2015. Coinciding with Yuri’s Night, the unconference ended with a space party! See the official SpaceUp ISU website for more information.

SpaceUp Cologne

SpaceUp Cologne was held at the ESA European Astronaut Center venue for two days on 21+22 March 2015. Go to the SpaceUp Cologne website for all information.

SpaceUp Phoenix

SpaceUp Phoenix was held at the Mesa Community College (MCC) on Sat. March 7, 2015. The event is sponsored by MCC, the Phoenix Chapter of the National Space Society (NSS), and the Phoenix Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). SpaceUp Stuttgart

SpaceUp Sweden

Sweden is getting ready to open up a new chapter in Space outreach by having its first ever SpaceUp in Stockholm, on 18 October 2014. SpaceUp Stockholm is being organized collaboratively by Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) and Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AAA). You can find out more at their website here.

SpaceUp Australia

SpaceUp Toulouse

Already the second SpaceUp event in France, this time at the home of Airbus, Arianespace and of course the famous Cité de l’Espace, which was the venue of SpaceUp Toulouse on 20 and 21 September 2014. They may be followed as @SpaceUpTLS on Twitter and have a great dedicated website here.

SpaceUp UK

The first SpaceUp on UK soil had been in the planning for quite a while, but London had the honour to host the UK space community on 5 and 6 July 2014. For more info on results follow @SpaceUpUK on Twitter and have a look at the official SpaceUp UK website.

SpaceUp Netherlands

The first ever SpaceUp in the Netherlands was hosted at the ESA’s “Space Expo” Visitor Centre just outside its main Technology Centre ESTEC in Noordwijk, just off the Dutch North Sea Beach. In the presence of historic and modern European, American and Russian space hardware the Dutch (and European) space community discussed cool space topics, only interrupted for a traditional Dutch pancake dinner on Saturday evening. SpaceUp Seattle

SpaceUp India

SpaceUp Denver

Space United, a humanitarian non profit space organization, is organizing the first SpaceUp in Colorado during the World Space Week. SpaceUp Atlanta

SpaceUp at ISDC 2013

A SpaceUp was held at the International Space Development Conference (the yearly conference of the National Space Society) in San Diego in May 2013. Follow @ISDC on Twitter or the ISDC page on Facebook for updates.

SpaceUp Paris

SpaceUp Seattle

SpaceUp Kansas

2012

SpaceUp India

The first SpaceUp in India was held in Bangalore in December 2012 and gathered 250 participants, the largest SpaceUp so far! The next one will be in Bhopal on December 6-7, 2013. Visit them at the SpaceUp India website, or follow them at @SpaceUpIndia on Twitter.

SpaceUp Poland

SpaceUp Stuttgart

SpaceUp Atlanta

SpaceUp Europe

SpaceUp Los Angeles

SpaceUp Toronto

SpaceUp Los Angeles

SpaceUp DC
